Road Tripping

“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” ~ Bill Bryson

It was Thursday and it was a holiday in South Africa and we were like Thelma and Louise.  Well, that is if Thelma and Louise had one other tagging along and the story ended a bit differently.

The point is, we were going on a road trip.

My best friend, my godson and I piled into the car, loaded with sweet things, good music, hot chocolate, coffee and a picnic and some warm clothes ~ just in case!

Destination unknown, we were hitting the road.

In the middle of nowhere, a coffee stop & a friend indeed ~ one who remembers to bring the sugar for the coffee even though she doesn’t take sugar! :)

Suddenly to my left I noted the pink blossoms on my left, I grabbed my camera that was sitting in my lap, wound down my window while telling Natalie frantically to slow down enough so I could take a photo quickly. Confusion reined, possibly a recent trip to high altitude is still affecting my brain. For some reason I thought she had stopped in the middle of the road and I kept asking if she was sure we were okay. No wonder she kept giving me strange looks! You see I though she had just stopped in the middle of the road, while in fact she had pulled over to the side of the road!

It was a perfect opportunity for me and Keagan to get out and stretch our legs and take the perfect picture of the pretty pink blossoms blooming without me worrying about a car coming flying down the road behind us.  In that moment as I got out to take the picture, it reminded me of an item I still have to tick off on my bucket list, to watch the cherry blossom bloom in Japan ~ maybe this was a sign!

Snow-capped mountain peaks ~ there was beauty all around us!

It is not down in any map; true places never are. ~ Herman Melville

Perfect reflections of snow-capped mountain peaks in the water and still we drove on the open road unfolding before us.

Reminders of Kilimanjaro stretching out before me, but this mountain had nothing on what I had just climbed a few weeks before. My godson, Keagan, bless his soul, so badly wanted to find snow to play in and even suggested we “just climb up there to where the snow is, it’s not far.”  Needless to say his heart broke when we told him it was too far to climb up there!

Eventually after many roads taken, we turned back towards home but not before stopping in Robertson to divulge in Dom Pedro’s and ice-cream & caramel filled pancakes.

Always a game and virtually impossible to get Keagan to smile because the minute you click the button he pulls a face ~ without fail ~ much to his delight!!

If you can’t beat him, join him! I stop smiling and naturally he smiles. Go figure ~ men!

Anything to hide a smile….

Two beautiful blessings in my life…

And finally a smile for me….

A day filled with laughter, friendship and the most breathtaking views, it was time to follow the road back home.

Life is about risk and randomness. You travel off the beaten path… in fact, it’s just better if you carve the way as you go along!
